Does LinkedIn Engagement Really Matter?

What do you think?

Does LinkedIn engagement really matter?

If you’re reading this newsletter, there’s a good chance you signed up via LinkedIn. It’s the social platform I invest most of my time in. When I first started posting on LinkedIn, I didn’t get much traction—few likes, comments, or impressions. I didn’t feel popular, and I questioned whether my posts were any good and worthwhile.

But I realised something: we live in a world where we expect instant success. We lack patience. We’re all guilty of it.

After several years of consistent effort, I now get more likes, impressions, and comments on my posts. I’ve grown to around 10k followers on LinkedIn.

But guess what?

I’ve never earned a penny directly from people liking my posts or from getting thousands of impressions.

You need to take action with your LinkedIn engagement

If a post on LinkedIn performs well in terms of impressions, it’s up to me to turn that engagement into something more.

Building relationships with those who engage with my posts is where the real value lies.

I think many people overlook this crucial part of the sales process—what we call social selling. Posting on LinkedIn isn’t enough. You need to follow up, create conversations in DMs, and potentially move those to zoom or coffee chats.

So, do likes and impressions matter?

Yes, they do. The more likes and impressions, the more people see your post, and the more potential customers you can engage with. But if you don’t take action and interact with those who engage with you, you’re just posting for the sake of posting.

Sure, someone might occasionally reach out to you for your services, but if you’re running a small business, you need to be proactive.

You can’t rely on what simply comes to you.

You can successfully run a small business with 1,000 LinkedIn followers. You don’t need to chase another 10,000 every month. It’s what you do with your current audience that truly matters.

P.s. If you’re a small business owner (freelance, solopreneur, small business) needing support with all things sales and business growth, send me a DM on LinkedIn so we can explore if I am able to support you.
