Newsletter #2

Starting a business wasn't my plan...

I used to have an old secondary school teacher who would say “better late than never” when students would arrive late to his class. Growing up, I was always taught to be on time. Be punctual. It’s a sign of respect. Yes I agree, it sure is! But guess what? Sometimes life happens and we’re all late sometimes.

Take this newsletter for an example - this was suppose to be released yesterday, but life happens and it’s being sent out to you today. Between meetings, family life and more, the days can get busy and I’m still finding my rhythm with the newsletter. I appreciate your patience!

It wasn’t my intention to start a business

I started to share my story (well, my frustrations) on LinkedIn and without any expectations, it got a lot of reaction. Mainly positive.

I didn’t have a plan, I was just posting.

Over the last 12 months, my LinkedIn profile has had over 7,000 new followers and approximately 2 million post impressions.

So I thought with the audience I am building, why not start my own small business and provide myself with flexibility…

My main reasons for starting my business include:

  • have more time with my family

  • be present when my family need me

  • be able to have more choice in my life (when + where I work, when I eat, when I go to the gym etc)

  • build something that truly helps other people to not have to go through the same sh*t I had to go through (bad bosses, redundancies, wrongful dismissal, employment tribunal… to name a few!)

I simply brought the skills I learnt in employment into the open market.

I have 10+ years experience in sales and business development so I decided to put them to good use to help others.

Nowadays, I help small business owners, start-ups and freelancers with all things sales and business growth (many people don’t start a business because they want to, they start their business because they need flexibility, and therefore struggle with selling).

My passion for helping people, selling and building long-lasting working relationships started when I got my first sales job working in Vodafone UK retail, selling mobile phones + broadband.

And honestly, I initially only applied for the job first time round at Vodafone because I thought it would be cool to work at the company that used to sponsor Manchester United!

My tip for the week:

  • Reach out to people to check-in without any asks or expectations

Isn’t it great when someone asks you “how are you?”

It’s nice to check-in with without any expectations. How often do you do this?

If you want to grow your business, you cannot do it by yourself.

You ever hear people say “your network is your net worth” - Yeah, I think this is true.

Only yesterday I had a coffee with a friend. We became friends thanks to LinkedIn.

We’re both self employed now. We speak regularly, we check-in here and there with each other and we cheer each other on.

I now have many connections now that I can reach out to for support, advice and to run things by. Many of my connections have become trusted friends.

I might be self-employed and running my own business, but I cannot achieve success by myself. My friends help me, a lot.

So yeah, “your network is your net worth”

Have an awesome week 👋
